Updating location via Email

You can update your location by sending an email to a special address that you can find on the Location Sources page of mapme.at. We will generate an email address that is unique to you that you should keep secret. If anyone finds out your email address, they will be able to update your location.

Once you have this email address you can update your location by simply sending an email to it containing either the label for a favourite, e.g.:

:favourite=home:

Or alternatively you can give a full latitude and longitude, e.g.:

:lat=51.50326:lon=-0.11968:

We also use this as a method to integrate with a few other apps. The iPhone app Here I Am is a great simple way of telling people where you are. You run the app and once it has an accurate enough location, click on the button to send an email with a link to Google Maps to show people where you are. If you send one of these emails to your unique mapme.at email address then we will parse it and update your location accordingly.

You can also use your unique email address to update your location in the background on an iPhone, or any other mobile device that will autodetect wifi access points. Currently the best place to find information about this is on Thom Shannon’s blog.
